Speedster Showdown Masteries Guide
Dark Sonic is a Super variant. Knight of the Wind is a full character. Unlocks are unofficial.
Masteries are the long-tail Sonic-line unlocks in Speedster Showdown. Two names get confused in every lobby: Dark Sonic and Knight of the Wind. Dark Sonic is an edgy Super-style variant — still an awakening skin on the Sonic you already play. Knight of the Wind is a full alternate character with its own moveset, not an ultimate swap stacked on vanilla Super. If you treat KOTW as “Sonic but gold,” you will lab the wrong buttons. The update overview on this page is the patch context; this guide is the distinction and the grind warning.
Do this after you can already convert on base Sonic. The Getting Started path, controls, and combos are prerequisites. A mastery does not fix a dropped F block.
Dark Sonic
Dark Sonic is the mastery people mean when they want Super to look meaner. Community language still calls the default Super pop 500 IQ in nav and tier talk. Dark is the edgy cousin of that pop, not a second fighter. Your M1 count, dash, and uppercut still come from the Sonic kit. You are unlocking a presentation and a variant, not a new movelist from zero.
If you main Sonic and you like the Super loop, Dark is the cosmetic-adjacent mastery. If you want a different round, that is Knight of the Wind.
Knight of the Wind is a full character
Knight of the Wind (KOTW) is a new Sonic-line fighter. New normals, new specials, new routing. Community clips claim some converts around 180 damage. That is a community claim, not a patch table. Measure it yourself. Lab it as you would Metal or Shadow, starting from three M1s, not from a Super cutscene.
Because it is a full kit, the roster page for Sonic and the tier list should list it as its own row when they are current. Do not average its win rate with vanilla Sonic. Do not copy a Super (500 IQ) awakening plan onto KOTW and call it a day. Awakening names for the rest of the cast stay on the awakenings guide.
Unlock requirements are unofficial
There is no official public formula on the Roblox description that this wiki will pretend exists. Community estimate for Knight of the Wind: about 300 to 400 Sonic kills plus about ten hours of play. That is a guess. It may be wrong tomorrow. Confirm the live requirement in Discord before you schedule a weekend around a number you read here.
What is safe to say:
- Unlocking is playtime and kills, not a Robux skip by default. The Mastery gamepass is a shop item; read the live text. Details are on gamepasses.
- You grind on Sonic, not on Tails, if the rumor stays Sonic-kill based.
- Ten hours of dying on Tails Doll Cove without landing M1s is not ten hours of progress.
- If Discord and this page disagree, Discord wins until a patch note lands on updates.
Do not flame people for “gatekeeping” an unofficial number. Ask. Then grind or don’t.
What the Knight of the Wind update also did
The same patch that shipped KOTW did more than add a mastery character:
- Map rotations changed. Stardust Speedway is already removed; vote the maps that exist. See Maps and Rotations and the KOTW update page.
- Infinite’s base kit was added. No awakening yet. Early Access still involved for that WIP-style access.
- Shadow was reworked. The 4th move is mostly an animation pass. Chaos Blast is still possible if you HOLD the charge-style move instead of tapping it.
If you came here only for KOTW and you main Shadow, that hold input is the note you actually needed.
How to grind without wrecking your fundamentals
- Play Sonic in less sweaty servers until three M1s, uppercut, and dash stun are boring. Controls and the cheatsheet first.
- Track kills in a way you trust. If the unofficial number is 300 to 400, a messy mental count will make you miserable at 280.
- Keep Green Hill in the vote when you can. Cove third parties pad deaths, not Sonic kills.
- Do not buy Early Access to “speed this up.” Mecha and Infinite are different kits. They do not feed a Sonic-kill rumor.
- When KOTW unlocks, lab it as a new character. One convert. Then matchups. Then a real lobby.
- If it does not unlock on schedule, stop, open Discord, and ask. Do not add 200 more kills on a bad rumor.
Naming so Discord can help you
Say Super or 500 IQ for vanilla Sonic’s awakening. Say Dark Sonic for the edgy Super mastery. Say Knight of the Wind or KOTW for the full alternate character. If you type “Sonic ult” you will get three different replies. The combat hub and Sonic roster entry use the same split.
Masteries are optional content for people who already like the revival. They are not the onboarding. If you are still dropping Q dashes on Green Hill’s bridge, you do not have a mastery problem. You have a movement problem, and that is a better problem because it is solvable tonight.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Is Knight of the Wind just Super Sonic with a different ultimate?
No. It is a full Sonic-line character with its own moveset. Dark Sonic is the edgy Super variant. Keep the three names separate.
How do I unlock Knight of the Wind?
There is no official public formula here. Community guess: about 300 to 400 Sonic kills plus about ten hours. Confirm in Discord before grinding.
Does the Mastery gamepass skip the KOTW grind?
Read the live shop text. Do not assume a skip. Pass notes are on the gamepasses guide.
What else shipped in the Knight of the Wind update?
Map rotation changes, Infinite's base kit (no awakening), and a Shadow pass where Chaos Blast still works if you HOLD the charge move. See the KOTW update.
Should I grind KOTW on day one?
No. Learn controls and a Sonic convert first. Masteries multiply a kit you already understand; they do not replace it.
